Women’s Basketball Season Recap

Frostburg State Women’s Basketball team dropped its season opener at La Roche 82-40, Monday, November 16th.

La Roche (1-0) jumped out to an early 6-0 start, but a three-pointer from freshman guard Megan Kelly and a jumper from senior forward Courtney Young brought the Bobcats within one. A great assist from junior guard Kache Fields to Megan Kelly for a layup gave the black and red its only lead of the game, 7-6. Four three-pointers from La Roche broke the game open to give the hosts an 18-7 advantage. The Bobcats fought hard to diminish the lead as much as possible, but by halftime La Roche was dominating 36-16.

La Roche kept up the excellent ball movement, defensive pressure and great teamwork to control the entire third quarter, pushing the lead to 67-25.

Despite the late push in the fourth quarter, the hungry Bobcats came up short, 82-40; Bryce Papp led the way with 9 points while Kirsten Rayner and Megan Kelly had a close 7 points each.

On Wednesday, November 18th the Bobcats fell to Juanita on the road 84-57. Junior forward Kirsten Rayner led the Bobcat offense with 17 points and posted 11 rebounds, her first double-double of the season. Her teammate, Kache Fields also posted double points for the Bobcats, putting up 12.

The Bobcats pushed through the game with great vocal leadership from players and coaches off the bench and good games from Kache Fields and Kirsten Rayner, but they were unfortunately no match for the Eagles. The Eagles recorded four players with double figures scoring, led by Kelly Leamer with 14 points.

Luckily the Bobcats had the Jim Crawley Tournament hosted in Frostburg’s very own Bobcat Arena November 20th-21st, hosting great competition such as St. Joseph’s College Brooklyn, Gettysburg and SUNY Geneseo.

Facing St. Joseph’s College first, the Bobcats dominated the whole game, pulling out the stunning 78-57 win.

Frostburg rebounded from the early deficit by shooting a season-high 45.9 percent from the floor on 34-of-74 attempts. The Bobcats also held a 52-36 edge in rebounding and handed out 21 assists. Over a five-minute stretch in the middle of the third quarter, FSU cruised to a 23-point cushion behind a 20-2 outburst. Moments later, Frostburg pushed its advantage to a game-high 26 twice before closing out the quarter with a 65-41 lead.

Junior Kirsten Rayner scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, all on the offensive glass. Freshman Carissa Shepko also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 defensive rebounds. Sophomore Adjowa Pinkrah scored 13 points, while senior Courtney Young and freshman Jasmine Tirado-Viscalla documented 10 points each.

Moving onto the championship game after the great win, FSU fell to Gettysburg 53-83, receiving the runner up trophy.

Even with the loss in the championship game, FSU had an impressive tournament allowing all of their fans to support and give a preview of what the team plans to prove this year.

More recently, FSU took on CAC competition in Christopher Newport and Penn State-Harrisburg, and on December 5th at 1 p.m. in Bobcat Arena, they continue their hard work on the court against Salisbury, an inner conference rival.
