Women’s Basketball Takes Loss to Conference Rival

On Saturday, Dec. 7th, the Frostburg State University (FSU) women went head to head with their conference rival, the University of Charleston in Charleston, W.Va. Frostburg was coming off a game where they scored their season-high in points. The Bobcats hoped to use their positive momentum in their next match-up, but their next competition was ranked number two in the Mountain East Conference standings. The Charleston Golden Eagles controlled the game from the start, never allowing Frostburg to get a clear rhythm.

The first half started with the Golden Eagles knocking down a three-pointer to go up 3-0. Victoria Diggs answered back with a jumper of her own to put Frostburg down one point. Three and a half minutes later, Charleston had scored 14 to Frostburg’s 3, making the score 16- 5. Charleston led with six minutes left in the quarter. Frostburg battled back scoring 11 points, making the score 16-24 in Charleston’s favor to end the first quarter.

The second quarter involved growth and erasing of a great lead by the Golden Eagles. FSU went down by 20 points with 4 minutes left in the quarter, but after free throws from Jada Holland, Ciara Thomas, and Morgan Dombroski and a three-pointer from  Diggs, the lead was cut down to 13 points.

The second half start was an explosion by Charleston, scoring 35 points in the third quarter to Frostburg’s 5. For FSU, this was the quarter that stopped any thoughts of them winning, but grew a mindset to just keep playing and learn from all mistakes that they made. In the fourth quarter, they did this, not allowing themselves to be held to single-digit points. Instead, they scored 17 to end the game 99-56 with Charleston winning.

The scoring leaders in the game were  Thomas with 12 points, Anna Reese with 9 points, Diggs with 8 points, and Holland with 6 points.

The Bobcats women’s basketball team will be back in action at Glenville State on Dec. 11th with tip-off slated for 5:30 p.m.
