Women’s Lacrosse Looks Forward from 2013 Season

This Saturday, Frostburg’s women’s lacrosse team begins their 2014 spring season. Last year, the team finished with a 5-11 record. The team started last season off winning three of their first five games.

Unfortunately, the team lost their last seven games on the season. In three of those last seven games, the team allowed more than 20 points. The team also only scored more than 10 points twice during that seven-game losing streak. Although last season was not bad, losing one of their star players to a season-ending injury did not help the team. For the upcoming 2014 season, the lady Bobcats are listed as seventh best in their division.

Malory Brunett, who was awarded rookie of the year in 2011 and is a two-time All-CAC second team member, is back this season after her injury. In 2012, Brunett had 43 goals, 9 assists, and 52 points. Brunett coming back will only add to the teams already star studded midfield.

Returning from last season are senior Megan White and junior Jessica Jones. Last season, White led the team in goals with 32. Along with her 32 goals, she also was third on the team in points with 38. Jones caused nine turnovers and 15 ground balls.

Taylor Cassat, last year’s leader in points, will not return for this upcoming season. Not only did Cassat lead the team in points, but she was also was third on the team in goals with 26 and was second on the team in assists with 15. Her departure will end up putting pressure on the other players, forcing them to rise to the occasion and step up their game.

Coach Megan Foy is hopeful for this upcoming season. She said she would like to build upon last year’s success and have the team become a name that is respected in the CAC.

The team will probably end up focusing on defense as the team allowed 240 goals last year. Along with looking at the defense, the team may end up focusing on the taking care of the ball. Last season, the team turned the ball over 325 times, while only forcing 271 turnovers themselves.

The lady Bobcats will host the Allegheny Gators on Feb. 22 at 5 p.m.
