Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Loss in Home Opener

In their home opener, the lady Bobcats lost to the Allegheny Gators 16-10. The first half saw the two teams in a back and forth struggle for the lead, and neither team held a lead for long. FSU held a 4-2 lead at one point, but they did not hold it for long. Toward the end of the first half, the Gators started to gain momentum as they found a 10-6 lead at halftime.

FSU swapped goalies after the first half, and while it helped stop the bleeding, it was not enough. The lady Bobcats were unable to keep up with the Allegheny offense, as they were outscored 6-3 in the second half.

A handful of players put together some great games. Ellie Garner, a junior, scored a hat trick. Behind her is freshman Molly Hart, who scored twice. Emani Byrd, also a freshman, forced four turnovers for the lady Bobcats. Recording assists for FSU were Megan White, Malory Brunett, and Brittney Miller. White and Brunett also contributed a goal each. Heather Lowe, who came into the goal at halftime, only allowed six goals and she made five saves.

The silver lining of this game is the performance of the young players on the team. Byrd and Hart are both freshmen, and they played excellently in their first game. The team is not inexperienced either; Seniors White and Miller as well as juniors Garner and Brunett are not only talented, but experienced as well. This group will provide key leadership for the young players.

The lady Bobcats have had a disappointing first game. Fortunately, the season is just beginning and there is plenty of time to put together a winning record and make it into the CAC tournament.

The lady Bobcats will host the Catholic University Cardinals on Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.
