Women’s Soccer Draws St. Mary’s on Senior Night

After suffering a 0-3 loss against Mary Washington this past Wednesday, Frostburg State (FSU) women’s soccer redeemed themselves a few days later.

On Saturday, Oct. 13, the Bobcats managed a 0-0 tie in double overtime against St. Mary’s College (SMC). Playing for 110 minutes, neither team was able to add to the scoreboard.

The game also happened to be Frostburg’s senior night featuring seniors (from left): Rhianna Lapen, Melissa Krofcheck, Hailey Turney, Kelly Richards, Anais Ventura, and Danielle Ferris.

FSU women’s soccer head coach, Brian Parker, mentioned, “our six seniors have been very important to us. The team as a whole is filled with good players and great students, all role models in many ways.”

During the game, FSU outshot SMC with 11 shots on goal, 22 shots total. Meanwhile, SMC only had two shots on goal, with 11 shots total.

In the first period of overtime, FSU totaled five shots. Two of these shots were saved by SMC, while the other three were shot too high. FSU senior Hailey Turney (2), sophomore Helen Francis (1), junior Brooke Shehade (1), and junior Gwen Schemm (1) each contributed to these five shots.

After failing to rack up the scoreboard in overtime, FSU and SMC went into double overtime. FSU senior Anais Ventura attemped two shots, one that was too high and the other too wide. Shehade had two shots on goal, one within the first 30 seconds, and one within the last 30 seconds or so. Unfortunately, both of her shots were saved by SMC’s goalie, Katie Flores.

“We had a bit of a slow start but once we got into the game a bit we created a lot of good chances to score. It’s a bit frustrating that we didn’t score, but we worked hard and defended very well. We were awesome in the overtime periods and I was happy with the energy and focus our players showed in 110 minutes of soccer,” Parker remarked.

Regarding the rest of the season, Parker said, “in spite of our overall record, the focus and commitment of the team is very high. We’re hopeful we can finish the season strong. We are focused on finishing in the top half of our conference standings so we can earn a home game in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament.  We’ll likely have to win two of our final three games to make that happen.”

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, the Bobcats will travel to Buena Vista, VA to take on Southern Virginia at 5 p.m.
