Women’s Soccer Hat Trick Performed by Erin Worthman
Women’s Soccer dominated Penn State Harrisburg in a 5-1 game Wednesday, October 8, 2015. Coming off of a win against York PA, the team is confident and optimistic about what’s to happen in the near future.
Erin Worthman’s impressive game ultimately led the team to a victorious win. Scoring all of the five points, Worthman acquired her career’s second hat trick, which is, when a player scores three goals in one game. Not only did she achieve this but she did so within the 25th minute of the opening half. “It was a great feeling, I’ve done it before but never at Frostburg, my teammates passed and set me up for amazing goals”, says Worthman.
Teammates Leah Yurko, Chelsie McCoy and Brooke Longo all assisted Worthman in achieving her five goals. These ladies attempted their own shots as well, but were unable to reach the net. Senior Brooke Longo was the first to set up a pass for Worthman, bringing the game to 1-0 within the first two minutes. After intense defense held off both teams, Worthman was able to tally two more goals, both unassisted, completing her hat trick. Both Yurko and McCoy were also able to assist in Worthman’s outstanding game. Setting the ball up early in the second half, this allowed for the teams score to rise 5-0. This is the third time this season where Women’s Soccer was able to dominate a team by scoring five goals. The first win being the game opener against St. Vincent (5-0) and the second against Penn State Altoona (5-2).
This women’s soccer team set a CAC record for the amount of points in a game against a CAC opponent. Also, Worthman’s five goals were the most ever scored by a single player this season. Worthman states, “I plan to end with another CAC championship under my belt and get another chance in the NCAA tournament. I have a sour taste in my mouth from how last year ended and the team and I plan on changing that.”
The team now leads an undefeated streak of 3-0 in the CAC division. “It puts us in a great position to be a top team in the conference; it was a little hard to get started from our non conference games but we pulled it together. The plan is to stay on this high and be in the championship game again”, states Worthman. Positioning themselves early, the team hopes to make it further than they did last year in the NCAA tournament.
The lady Bobcats are preparing for their upcoming game against Salisbury. Salisbury’s record currently stands at 8-3, and this game is expected to be challenging. Frostburg State University will open its field up to the lady Sea Gulls at 1:00 p.m., Saturday October 10th. All are welcome to attend and cheer on the women’s soccer team to help them attain another victory.
