Women’s Soccer Heads to MEC Championship
Frostburg State University (FSU) Women’s Soccer defeated Charleston 2-1 in the first overtime. This secured a spot for the Bobcats in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) championship. The championship game will take place in Beckley, West Virginia this Sunday November 14th at 1 P.M.
The Bobcats had many chances in the first half against Charleston, but could not capitalize. The first chance took place in the first 5 minutes when Toni Fiocco-Mizer beat Charleston’s last defender and went to goal. She shot far post, but the Charleston goalie got her hand on it forcing a corner kick. Charleston also had some great chances in the first half, but Sophomore keeper Ashley Bilger had a couple great saves to keep the score 0-0.
In the second half, Frostburg put up a quick goal as Charleston’s last defender made a mistake, and Fiocco-Mizer capitalized. This made the game 1-0. Unfortunately for Frostburg, FSU ended up fouling a Charleston player and they scored off a free kick. The Charleston player kicked the ball, finding Kiera Hill’s head who equalized the game (1-1). The rest of the half, both teams had good opportunities, but all shots were saved by both the keepers. Both keepers had five saves each.
The game went into overtime. This would either be two ten minute halves, or the first one to score. Or if neither team scored, it would end in a penalty kick shootout. But, in the last couple seconds of the first overtime, Fiocco-Mizer dribbled the ball and crossed it. The ball hit off both teams, and ended up going back to Fiocco-Mizer. She crossed the ball again, and a Charleston defender got on the end of it and caused an own goal. Frostburg ended up winning the game on Charleston’s mistake.
