Stout Defense Brings Success for Women’s Soccer
The Frostburg State University (FSU) Women’s soccer team has been playing great so far this season. The team currently has a record of 4-1-1, which has them occupying second place in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). After only three weeks, the team has showed that it’s ready to take control of the CAC. Last week, senior Stephanie Fazenbaker was named the ECAC Offensive Player of the Week. Fazenbaker has totaled up six goals and two assists. Before becoming an ECAC Player of the Week, Fazenbaker along with junior Brooke Longo and sophomore Jessi Martz were named to the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic All-Tournament earlier this season. In the tournament, the trio helped FSU produce a record of 1-0-1.
Defense has been the name of the game for the team this season. Until this past Saturday where the team fell to the Catholic Cardinals (2-1), no opponent has scored no than one goal. The only teams who have scored on the Bobcats in regular season games are the Cardinals and Washington & Jefferson. And in the case of the Washington & Jefferson game, that lone goal came in cleanup time after the Bobcats had already clenched the game with five goals. One area of concern for the team this season might be capitalizing on its opportunities. In the team’s most recent game against the Cardinals, the Bobcats had double the shot attempts their opponent had (16-8), but only scored one goal. This could simply be a result of the ‘bend but not break’ defense by the Cardinals, but only getting one goal from 16 shot attempts is still a bit disappointing.
The Bobcats’ next game will be against Penn State Altoona in PA. on Wednesday Sep. 17.
