Women’s Soccer Opens Division 2 Play
Women’s soccer began their season in NCAA Division II competition this past week playing two games, resulting in a tie and loss.
On Thursday, Sept. 5th, they played on the road with a nonconference match-up against Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The two teams played a hard-fought game going into two ten minute overtimes, playing a total of 110 minutes, and eventually ending in a tie of 1-1. The Bobcats had a slow start which led them being scored on and trailing the Rams early in the first half. The Bobcats responded to the goal quickly as Frostburg sophomore Audra Curtin scored the only goal for the Bobcats 12 minutes after the Rams scored to tie the game.
Offensively, the Bobcats had a total of 24 shots led by senior Brooke Shehade with 7 shots, Curtin with 4 shots, senior Jesse Dunagan with 4 shots and sophomore Kori Striano with 2.
Defensively, senior Rylee Learn and sophomore Makenzie Folch led the backline with a strong performance in the match to help-out goalkeepers, senior Emily Faust, and first-year Taylor Longworth. The two of them had a combined total of 12 saves to keep the Bobcats in the game. The tough opponent helped to prepare the Bobcats for the next game.
On Saturday, the Bobcats played under the lights in the Bobcat Stadium against another nonconference opponent, Shippensburg University. They lost the game on a last second goal to fall 1-0 to the Raiders. With 10 seconds left in the game, the Bobcats gave up a corner kick which the Raiders took and scored with a header at the 89:58 mark. Unfortunately, this ended the game, and the Bobcats did not have a chance to come back and tie it. The Bobcats had a total of 12 shots this game with shots from Shehade, senior Gwen Schemm, Dunagan, and junior Emily Lehman. Goalkeeper Longworth had 4 saves.
The Bobcats are looking for their first win of the year with their next opportunity being on Sunday, September 15th. They are traveling to Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida with a 6:00 pm start time.
