World Premiere of “Where Words Cannot Go” on March 7
Frostburg State University Wind Ensemble is performing the world premiere of Nicole Piunno’s latest work “Where Words Cannot Go.” It is taking place Saturday, March 7, 2020 7:30 PM in Pealer Recital Hall at the Performing Arts Center on the FSU Campus.
Piunno will be in residence for the performance. She is a composer who views music as a vehicle for seeing and experiencing the realities of life. Her music often reflects the paradoxes in life and how these seeming opposites are connected as they often weave together.
“Where Words Cannot Go,” is a piece written from a place of profound empathy for those who have experienced the loss of someone important in their lives. Regarding this composition, Piunno has said: “There are times in life when it is hard to find the right words. At times like this, music is often able to speak in ways we cannot. My wish is that ‘Where Words Cannot Go’ can be whatever it needs to be for anyone who hears it.”
The concert will be rounded out with winning works by women composers. Professor Shannon Shaker, a lecturer in FSU’s Department of Music and director of Bands at FSU, runs a competition for women’s band compositions to promote women in the field. The Wind Ensemble will perform many of these works on Friday, March 13, at the Maryland Music Educators Association Conference. Those in attendance for the March 7 concert will get a preview of the conference performance.
Admission to the concert is $10 for adults; $5 for FSU faculty and staff, seniors and members of the military; and free for students and children. Tickets are available online at tickets.frostburg.edu and at the door.
