An Open-World Star Wars Game May Be On the Way
Electronic Arts has recently posted a new job listing on their website that suggests a new, open world Star Wars game is in the works. The company is looking to hire a “lead online engineer” at their Vancouver Studio in Burnaby, Canada, and the opening sentence of the job description plainly reads, “Lead a team to deliver Online features for a Star Wars Open World project.” Although this more or less confirms that an open world Star Wars game is at least being considered, no further details about the project have been revealed, and the title has not been officially announced. This is not the first time that EA has hinted at an open world Star Wars game. In 2013, they posted a similar job listing on their website seeking Animation Director “to help define and deliver on the vision for a major new next-gen open world action game.”
As exciting as an open world Star Wars game may sound, some gamers may be put off by the fact that EA is behind it. This hesitation is mainly due to the fact that their latest Star Wars title, Battlefront II, caused major controversy with its microtransaction system. Basically, the system in place encouraged players to spend real money to progress in the game’s multiplayer, which made it into a “pay to win” game. The uproar over this system’s unfairness was so great that the game’s sales suffered, and EA’s stock value dropped by about $3.1 billion. It is hoped that this blow to EA has put them in line and will ensure that they do not attempt any greedy scams in their next Star Wars title, assuming it comes into fruition.
