Bobcats Split With Goldey-Beacom
On Sunday Feb. 23, the Frostburg State University (FSU) Baseball Team was in Cary, North Carolina to take on the Goldey-Beacom (GB) Lightnings in a double header. FSU was able to split with GB earning their second win of the weekend. This was a defensive battle that only allowed a single digit number of points by both teams in both games.
With a very slow start, game one against GB showed that tracking the ball was going to be a breeze for the fielders of both teams. The first three possessions of the game featured nine batters from both teams, all swinging out on their first hit. This would be the theme throughout the day. It wasn’t until the bottom of the second that Andrew Smith had the first hit to start off the game, but even the benefit of that was short lived after he and Tre D’Amico were forced out.
An inning later, at the top of the third, GB scored one run on a passed ball. Frostburg, still doing a good job limiting the Lightnings, FSU tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning one to one. GB answered quickly sending a runner home on a single, and with the last possession of the game Frostburg was not able to score.
Later that day, in the second game, FSU started off with possession, and the second verse was same as the first. The Bobcats were being forced out on the ground, through the air, and by being struck out. The Bobcats made great efforts, but each time came up short. Bryce Jackson hit a flied out, giving Bret Fogle the chance to get to third base, but getting no further. Despite AJ Campbell was able to steal second base, with Tre D’Amico walking to first, no other FSU batter allowed them to get any farther.
Goldey-Beacom wasn’t having the easiest of time either batting either. There was three times in game where GB’s offense was off the field within three plays because of immediate catch outs, and strikeouts. At the top of the fourth, Worthy Hollister hit a double to right field sending Devin Griffith home for the only score of the game. The Bobcats were able to hold on for the remaining innings, and win one to zero.
Leaders of the day were Worthy Hollister with hitting, AJ Campbell with pitching, and Hayden McLaughlin with fielding.
The Bobcats will travel to West Virginia next to play a double-header against Shepard on Sunday, March 1st.
