Bobcats take Sixth at the CAC Championship
The 2015 Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Indoor Championship was hosted at Christopher Newport University, Saturday, Feb. 21. Christopher Newport, VA. opened their home to seven teams wrapping up the last indoor track and field meet, in preparation of the upcoming outdoor season.
Frostburg State University’s men and women’s team totaled 38 (women’s) and 37 (men’s) points, resulting in sixth place. Although the Bobcats did not conclude the meet making top 3 in awards, individual athletes placed in their events and were able to be the voice of the team.
Bobcat Collin Schultz won 1st place in the entire division of men’s high jump. Jumping his season’s best of 1.98 meters (equivalent to 6ft. 6.0in) there is no doubt that Schultz has a bright future ahead of him. Along with Schultz making his voice heard, junior J.R. Lowery not only gained the title of Second Team All-CAC in throws, but also broke his own school record. Lowery finished throws in 2nd place with a personal best of 16.03 meters, equivalent to 52ft. 6.75in., as well as finishing runner-up in shot put.
Alexis Bush, a senior, who won 1st place in the entire division of the women’s long jump, helped in leading the Bobcat ladies team. Taking home her second title throughout her three years on the team, Bush has also earned all CAC honors in the long jump in each of the last three seasons. Along with Bush, freshman Kayla Truesdel placed overall second in both the 200 meter dash as well as the 400 meter dash. Running a time of 26.45 in the 200 meter dash and 1:01.04 in the 400 meter dash, Truesdal earned the title of all-conference honors in both events.
When asked how her past seasons had gone, Bush stated, “My past seasons have gone well. I have trained hard and each year it has paid off. My goals for my last season is to train hard, and stay healthy and leave everything on the track or in my case, the jump pit.” In regard to Bush’s hard work paying off, she also speaks out about what it meant to her having been titled CAC-all honors. “ Being titled CAC-all honors was unexpected. I am truly grateful that I was given such a meaningful title.”
In her last semester at FSU, Bush said, “[I] take every practice one at a time and every meet one at a time, and even when the time for me to leave FSU comes, hopefully I’ve done all that I’ve set out to do, and make my family, friends and the coaches proud in the process.”
After mentioning how she remembered what it felt like to walk on for preseason workouts as a freshman, Bush is sad for this to be her last season, but is prepared and willing to make her teammates and coaches proud.
Although the CAC Championship concluded this past week, both the women and men’s team will compete at the Mason Last Chance Meet at George Mason University on Sunday, March 1. When Coach Dale Luy was recently asked in an interview, how he thought the season was going and will continue to go on, he stated, “we want to be at our best by the end of the year”. Speaking in terms of the upcoming outdoor season, Coach Luy is in the hopes of having an outstanding outdoor season. Using this indoor track and field season as preparation, the athletes will come out and be ready for the outdoor season and soon qualifying for ECAC Championships in May.
