Field Hockey Team Earns First Win

The Frostburg field hockey team traveled to Converse College on Oct. 19th to take on the Valkyries at their home turf. Frostburg would enter into overtime for the third time and come out victorious, earning their first win of the season.

The game opened up with a slow start. It was not until 35 minutes into playtime that the Valkyries were able to put a score on the board. Converse’s Bo Linders was able to score with an assist from Bella Pistilli. Converse would lead in front of Frostburg 1-0 going into the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats did not trail behind for long. 9 minutes into the fourth quarter junior Brooke Lafayette was able to get past the Converse keeper with an assist by classmate Gabby Rachuba.  This would close the gap between the Bobcats and Valkyries. The teams ended up with a deadlock at the end, pushing the teams in overtime.

Overtime brought much excitement to the game for both sides. Each team was going back and forth taking their shots at the goal but with no result on either side. It was with less than a minute left when  Rachuba found the back of the net for the Bobcats. The score would stand 2-1 in favor of the Bobcats.

Goalie Sierra Smizer played all 69 minutes. The Bobcat senior earned herself one save during game time.

Frostburg clearly outplayed Converse in this matchup. Frostburg totaled 7 overall shots on the goal while Converse only stood with the shots. Bobcats Taylor Hackett (2) and Sam Coffey (1) contributed their shots during the aggressive offensive attempt from Frostburg.

The game ended 2-1 with the first win of 2019 for Frostburg. This is Frostburg’s first Division II win for the field hockey team. The Bobcats currently stand with a record of 1-12 this season.

Frostburg will continue on the road for the next 2 games. Sunday, Oct. 20 they will face off against Limestone. Following, the team will travel to Erie, PA, to play against Mercyhurst.
