FSU Volleyball Wins the Weekend
On Friday Oct. 22, the Frostburg State University (FSU) women’s Volleyball team traveled to Athens West Virginia to take on the Concord University (CU) Mountain Lions.
This was tough competition between the Mountain Lions and Bobcats. With some close wins and losses, the match was drawn out to five sets, and you could feel that the first team to win a consecutive set would be the victors of the night.
In the first set, FSU got out to an early lead of 6-3 as a result of a couple of kills by Beverly Braun and an attack error by Fiona Gonzalez Medina. The largest lead of the set was nine, and held by Concord. At the mid mark the score was showing 13-22, but that didn’t keep FSU from churning forward. Frostburg went on a six score run to cut CU’s lead down to three. The Bobcats would score one more time, but unfortunately for them, would not stop Concord from closing the set out 25-21.
The second set was way less competitive as FSU would dominate throughout. In five different instances, the Bobcats would go on a scoring streak waiting for it to be broken by the Mountain Lions. The longest streak was eleven straight points which took the score from 6-6 to 17-6. Finishing out the second set, Concord would not be able to catch up, and the final score would be 25-16. In the third set, it came down to another stressful situation for each team. After a score of 22-24 (Concord leading), Frostburg’s Mckenna Houser set up a kill for Braun who delivered and cut the lead in half. Then, a service ace by McKaily Thomas-Moran tied the game up. All seemed to be well for Frostburg until two immediate kills caused Concord to win 26-24.
For set number four of the volleyball match, dejavu seemed to kick in for those watching because Frostburg would win the same way as in set two, 25-16. With a smaller score to get to in set five, FSU came out focused and poised, not caring what situations looked like. CU blasted out to an early lead of five, but made an error in letting FSU regain hope. The final score was Braun blocking an attack error attempt which gave FSU the victory over CU, 15-10.
The women’s Volleyball team will once again be on the road to take on Alderson Broaddus this upcoming Tuesday Oct. 26 at 7 P.M.
