Kansas City! Your Chiefs Are Super Bowl Champions
On Sunday February 12, 2023, Super Bowl 57 was underway. It was the unstoppable Philadelphia Eagles clashing against the unmovable Kansas City Chiefs. For both teams, most of the attention was placed on their quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes, and Jalen Hurt. This super bowl had special meaning in this regard because it would be the first super bowl where both teams would be starting a black quarterback.
There’s the case many times in sports where a dominant team will go against a vigorous team that knows how to win, and Sunday, the vigorous Kansas City Chiefs became your Super Bowl Champions.
One of the questions that were asked leading up to the Super Bowl was ‘is Patrick Mahomes 100% when it comes to his bodily health after the injury he sustained in the divisional round of the playoffs against the Jaguars?’ Though this was a question many sports analysts and the Philadelphia Eagles themselves had, Mahomes rarely showed weakness in any game following the one he got injured in.
In the first half of the big game, the Eagles were still working with the momentum of the previous eight quarters they played. They defeated the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers with a total point ratio of 69-14. The way Philadelphia was moving down the field on their first possession gave many fans the impression that it was already over for the Chiefs.
Kansas City survived the first half hanging on by 10 points. Fortunately for them, this was not unfamiliar territory for the Chiefs. They were able to put together two drives, both scoring touchdowns due to busted coverage from the Eagles, and just like that the game was tied.
In the fourth quarter, there was a call made by the referees that was questionable, to say the least. Had that call not been made, maybe we would be discussing a different outcome to the super bowl. A holding penalty was called against the eagles that looked very ticky-tack, but reasonable. Following that, the Chiefs did a great job of running out the clock until the Eagles had no more timeouts. Kansas City kicked the game winning field goal and the game was over.
Patrick Mahomes has now won two super bowl championships, has been in the conference championship game every year since becoming a starter, he has never had to play a road playoff game, and his overall record in the NFL is 64-16. He has not reached the level of greatest of all-time status like Tom Brady, but with what he has shown so far, he has the potential to pass him if he stays at this rate of winning he’s in.
