Lady Bobcats Visit Salisbury for CAC Tournament

The 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament started the week of April 18th for both the men and women’s baseball/softball teams of Frostburg State University.

Salisbury University opened up its field to start off the 2016 women’s CAC tournament. The teams competing in this year’s tournament consisted of Salisbury University, Christopher Newport, Frostburg State, York College of Pa., and Mary Washington. Day one, April 21, started off with the lady Bobcats challenging the number 8th ranked team, Christopher Newport.

The lady Bobcats fell short in the almost tied game against the ladies of Captain Chris (4-3). It wasn’t until the seventh inning where Christopher Newport’s Meagan Jones advanced their team’s core, taking the win and moving further in the tournament. FSU women’s team got out early in the first and second innings leading the game 2-0. Sophomore Sam Gatton and senior Allison William were the teams’ first scorers. It was the fourth inning that turned the game around for Christopher Newport.

FSU freshman Olivia Ford ran home in the top of the fourth advancing the score 3-0 against their rivals, but it wasn’t long after that the lady Captains made three scores tying the game 3-3. The fifth and sixth innings remained scoreless for both teams. In the final inning FSU was unable to make it home and put up a point up on the scoreboard, but Newport’s Jones was allowing their team to advance in the tournament.

The next game would go on to being an important one for the lady Bobcats. In order to stay alive and continue in the tournament, Frostburg State would have to advance past the lady Spartans of York College of Pa.

The dual started out with the lady Spartans getting out early and advancing their lead 2-0 in the first inning. The lady Bobcats remained scoreless until the third inning where Emily Zengel was able to make it home, but that was only enough to bring the score 2-1. The third inning remained scoreless by both teams, but FSU was able to advance in the fourth inning scoring three runs by freshman Olivia Ford, senior Lauren Capece and sophomore Sam Gatton. The fifth inning allowed the lady Spartans to earn an extra point and for the lady Bobcats to add two extra points to their already four points. Capece and senior Taylor Blevins were the scorers giving the lady Bobcats a chance to hold onto the lead the remainder game until the seventh inning. It was here where the lady Spartans advanced three extra points tying the game 6-6 but the lady Bobcats’ Mary Ann Moore was able to run home resulting in the games final score of 7-6.

At press time, the win against the lady Spartans allowed the lady Bobcats to advance to the next round of the tournament. Their next game in the tournament is scheduled is against Mary Washington, April 22nd at 12 pm.
