Men’s Basketball Falls to 1-3 in Conference Play

With two losses this week to West Virginia State and the University of Charleston, the Bobcat men’s basketball team slips to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in Mountain East Competition.

The loss to West Virginia State on Dec. 4th marked the third time the Bobcats put up over 80 points on the board. Despite the high scoring, Frostburg dropped the match-up 103-80. FSU senior Daniel Alexander and first-year Jaylon Johnson put up 22 and 21 points for the Bobcats, respectively.

Late in the first half, the Yellow Jackets took a 17-point lead. West Virginia played strong defense and was able to keep scoring to give them the 49-35 edge going into halftime.

In the second half, Alexander put away two free-throws, as the Bobcats were able to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 9 points. FSU was able to cut the lead into single digits multiple times but could never overcome the deficit. An 18-3 run sealed the victory for the Yellow Jackets as the game closed with a 23- point lead on their behalf.

The Bobcats stumbled against the University of Charleston on Dec. 7th. Once again, the Bobcats were able to score over 80 points, but it wasn’t enough. The Golden Eagles took Saturday’s game by a score of 107-87. Alexander led the Bobcats offensively with 16 points and classmate Lawrence Pettis Jr. contributed 14.

With less than 5 minutes left to go in the first half, Charleston took an 18-point lead. The Bobcats were able to get more points on the board, but the Golden Eagles still went into halftime ahead by a score of 57-36.

In the second half, the Bobcats were faced with a 33-point deficit, but a 13 offensive spell helped them cut the score to 89-65 with less than ten minutes remaining. However, it wasn’t enough to overtake the Golden Eagles. FSU lost the game by 27 points.

The Bobcats are looking to spark a winning streak as they take on Glenville State on Dec. 11th with tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
