Men’s Lacrosse Finishes Season, Strong Core for Next Season
Frostburg State University’s Lacrosse team dominated its competition this year, leading to record of 6-2 in their conference and 16-3 overall. The program has been steadily improving since its first two seasons, in which the team finished 6-11 and 2-13.
The Bobcats advanced to the Captial Athletic Conference (CAC) title game, but they unfortunately came up short to the Salisbury University Sea Gulls. However, even with that loss the team has plenty to build upon for next season and looks primed to continue their winning ways for years to come.
The season started with the team going on a 14 game winning streak. During that streak the games were one sided, with the Bobcats controlling every aspect of the games. The closet game in the streak was a 9-5 victory over McDaniel. Other than that most games had an average win differential of 9, thoroughly dominating their competition. Included in that 14 game win streak was a 20-3 win against St. Vincent and a 31-4 victory over Southern Virginia. The team didn’t do just one thing right this season, instead they were a complete team that had an overwhelming offense and an impenetrable defense.
The team’s two regular season loses were close games that came at the end of the regular season. Its first loss came to the current CAC champions, Salisbury, in a 7-8 overtime loss at home. Four days later the team hosted Mary Washington where they loss 7-8 for their second loss of the season. The Bobcats rebounded with a win against St. Mary’s to close the regular season.
Going 15-2 in the regular season made the Bobcats the second seed overall which gave them a bye in the first week of the CAC tournament. So after being able to rest, the team was matched up against Mary Washington. The Bobcats got their revenge against the Eagles with a close 7-6 victory to propel themselves to the CAC title game. For the second time in the tournament, the Bobcats would face a team that they lost to in the regular season as they played Salisbury in the tournament’s finals. This time however the team couldn’t avenge their regular season loss as the fell to Salisbury with a final score of 5-14.
The team had a great season and the CAC recognized the team’s hard work when it came to giving out the end of season awards. For the second time in three years, head coach Tommy Pearce was named coach of the year. Coach Pearce deserved the honors as he has positioned this team as one of the top teams not only the CAC, but nationally as well. Eight players received honors this season including Devin Colegrove, Zach Burkhardt, and Chris Rios.
While the team does have quite a few seniors on the roster who will be leaving this this year, a core nucleus of young players are ready to step up and continue the team’s upward path and with coach Pearce still there to lead them on, there is no doubt that the team will be in the CAC title picture for years to come.
