Monthly Netflix Rotation

As September comes to an end, fall is sweeping in and so are new Netflix arrivals. Unfortunately this also means that several television shows and movies will be leaving the beloved streaming site. The arrivals and departures started on October 1st and will continue throughout the month, although most changes have already started to take place. Most of the content being swapped is movies; however a few seasons of television shows are being removed as well.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first and go over the most important departures happening through October. Classic movies such as A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), The Big Lebowski (1998), The Exorcist (1973), Phantom of the Opera (1989), The Devil’s Rejects (2005), and You Got Served (2004) were sadly taken off of Netflix on October 1st. One of Leonardo DiCaprio’s best films to date, The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), is also being taken off of Netflix, and that may just be the biggest disappointment yet. The Wolf of Wall Street was also DiCaprio’s latest performance. Luckily his next film, The Revenant, is set to be released later this year. A few other big name movies like Twilight (2008) and Brüno (2009) will also be leaving, but they will not be quite as missed. The comedy Brüno, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, who is also the star of Borat, will be available until October 16th. A few television series departing include Hawaii Five-O: Seasons 11 and 12 (1978, 1979), Hotel Impossible: Seasons 1 and 2 (2012, 2013), and Saturday Night Live: The 2010s: Season 37 (2011/2012). Luckily, nothing too exciting in the way of television is leaving. Many more fantastic movies than just the ones listed above are leaving. With the loss of so many great movies, Netflix viewers would expect an influx of amazing films. Sadly, the movies coming to Netflix do not quite compare to the losses. While some of the additions like American Pie (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Batman Begins (2005), and August: Osage County (2013) are exciting, it is a little disappointing that more Halloween movies are not being added. However, on October 26th, a drama/thriller titled Manson Family Vacation is being added. IMDb’s brief description of the movie states “Two brothers tour Charlie Manson murder sites. One is a devoted family man. One is devoted to The Family.” Hopefully this movie is as haunting as it sounds since it just in time for Halloween.

As far as newly added television shows, there is, again, nothing too exciting coming except the fourth season of the popular show, American Horror Story. The fourth season of American Horror Story follows a burnt out circus group in Jupiter, Florida. The stars of the show Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Kathy Bates return as various “circus freaks” with oddities like lobster hands and three breasts. Unfortunately, the fourth season will not be available until October 6th which is the day before American Horror Story: Hotel premieres on FX. Other televisions shows like Hemlock Grove, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, and Arrow will also be adding more seasons throughout October.
