NFL Draft Picks 1-5
The 2020 NFL Draft was different, to say the least, but that did not stop that process NFL teams choosing the best of the best college players to enhance their teams. It was a rough 2019 season for the Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, and Miami Dolphins as they ended the season as the worst records in the NFL. This, fortunately, means for these teams they received first dibs on the supreme talent of the draft. The order of the picks from one to five was Cincinnati, Washington, Detroit, New York, then Miami. Each team picked great players they thought could help their team but each team had different reasons.
The Bengals took Joe Burrow as the first overall draft pick. Burrow is a Heisman Trophy Winner, and recent College Football champion with the LSU Tigers. He has already proven to be a champion and well-rounded quarterback (QB), worthy of starting as soon as he can. The bright side for Burrow is he doesn’t have to really compete for the starting job because of the former Bengal QB’s departure, but with the recent unfortunate seasons of the Cincinnati franchise, they’ll be expecting a guy that can turn that all around.
For the second overall pick in the draft, the Redskins selected defensive end (DE) Chase Young. Unlike Cincinnati, Washington did not make their pick based on need. Just as many other analysts, coaches, and general managers thought, the Redskins staff saw Young as the best player in the draft, but this is only one reason of two reasons Young was a great pick. Young is from Upper Marlboro, MD, only ten miles from FedEx Field where the Redskins Play.
“Young is the most physically gifted player in the 2020 class,” said ESPN’s Steve Muench. He went on to say that while Washington definitely has greater needs than DE “He is the most talented player in the draft and too good a value to pass on.”
Young will be paired with a gang of first-round front four defensive players just like himself. Jonathan Allen drafted in 2017, and Daron Payne drafted in 2018 both came out of Alabama as first-round defensive tackles (DT).
