Russian Opposition Leader Sentenced to Moscow Prison
Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption activist and prominent Russian dissenter, was sentenced to two and a half years in a Moscow prison on February 1 after authorities claimed he violated the terms of parole from previous arrests.
Mr. Navalny returned to Moscow after seeking treatment in Germany due to being poisoned by agents from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) over the summer. In a recorded phone call with a duped FSB Agent, Navalny was able to prove that the poison, Novichok, was applied to his underwear. Novichok is also the poison that was used against dual Russian-British citizens Sergei and Yulia Skripal in 2018.
Before Navalny returned to Russia, he spent his time in Germany investigating President Vladimir Putin’s wealth and connections. Shortly upon returning to Moscow, he released a documentary going over Mr. Putin’s rise to power, from his time as a KGB Officer in Dresden to his present position as President of Russia. In the video, he showcases drone footage of what appears to be a 17,691 square-meter palace off the coast of the Black Sea. Mr. Putin has denied any involvement in the construction of the compound.
Since the documentary’s release and his subsequential arrest, tens of thousands of Russian citizens have taken to the streets demanding the resignation of Mr. Putin. On January 23, over 3000 protesters were arrested. One week later, nearly 5000 more were sent to fill Moscow’s jail cells. The Kremlin believes that Navalny and his supporters are a sign of the U.S. meddling in the country’s internal affairs.
In a speech at the Department of State on February 4, newly sworn-in President Joe Biden said that the days of the United States “rolling over” in the face of Russia’s aggression had concluded. “Mr. Navalny, like all Russian citizens, is entitled to his rights under the Russian constitution. He’s been targeted — targeted for exposing corruption. He should be released immediately and without condition.” President Biden added in his remarks that the the Biden administration could respond to the arrest by implementing more economic sanctions on the Russian Government.
Mr. Navalny remained defiant at his sentencing and vowed his supporters to press on with the struggle. “He’ll [Putin] go down in history as nothing but a poisoner. We all remember Alexander the Liberator and Yaroslav the Wise. Well, now we’ll have Vladimir the Poisoner of Underpants — that’s how he will go down in history,” Navalny exclaimed to the court.
