The Bottom Line’s Recommendation of the Week

This week, in honor of Black History Month, The Bottom Line recommends “Brown and Black”.

The “Brown and Black” podcast, hosted by Jack Rico and Mike Sargent, is conversational. They use their voices as Black and Latino men, to shed light on different topics regarding race and society. Their episodes range from current events to disparities the Black and Brown community faces. In their most recent episode, they conducted a film analysis on “Get Out”. Their film analyses cover cultural significance, deeper meanings, and their own movie critiques. Their other episodes have included discussions on cultural appropriation and appreciation, institutional racism, representation of people of color in society, etc.

The “Brown and Black” podcast was an honoree in the 2022 Webby Awards. The Webby Awards are put on by the International Academy of Digital Arts. According to the Webby website, the Webby Awards is the Internet’s most respected symbol of success. Any form of digital art are able to be nominated some examples are; apps, podcasts, websites, or games. The “Brown and Black” podcast was an honoree specifically for the Best Co-Hosts award. The qualifications for this award are; a minimum of (2) hosts who demonstrate the best qualities of hosting a podcast interview or conversation. On Apple Podcasts, “Brown and Black” gets a rating of 4.3 out of 5.

The Bottom Line recommends this podcast because of the host’s honest perspective on important topics, but also for the conversational atmosphere they create. They make sure to represent people of color in many societal institutions, not just society as a whole. As members of the film and media community, they are able to shed light on the meanings of media and how representation matters. Since this podcast is explicit, The Bottom Line recommends this podcast to the adult community. We do not recommend this podcast to listeners who dislike political topics.

Jack Rico and Mick Sargent created this podcast in 2020 and are continuing to release episodes on a weekly basis. Their podcast is available on all listening platforms as well as social media. For our final rating, The Bottom Line gives the “Brown and Black” podcast a 4.7 out of 5.
