This Week in Frostburg Sports

 

Field Hockey:

The Goucher Gophers went home with a win after Tuesday night’s game at Bobcat Stadium. Frostburg was able to put points on the board, with a goal scored by sophomore Gabby Rachuba. This loss puts the Bobcats at 0-5 so far this season. Their second game of the week was on Thursday, Sept. 20 against Bridgewater. The final score was 1-2, in favor of the Eagles. First-year Taylor Hackett scored the first goal of her collegiate career after taking a pass from senior Cara Morrell. The Bobcats hit the road over the weekend, traveling to play Roanoke on Saturday afternoon and Ferrum on Sunday. The Roanoke game did not end well for the Bobcats, losing 2-4. Junior Logan Gladden scored the two goals. Goalkeeper Sierra Smizer registered 11 saves in the loss. The Bobcats rolled over Ferrum this Sunday, blanking Panthers 8-0. Senior Holly Van Wie and sophomore Sam Coffey each scored two goals. Senior Molly Pickard, senior Ashleigh Myers, junior Logan Gladden, and first-year Rylee Johnson each scored one goal. It was Johnson’s first collegiate goal.

Men’s Soccer:

The Bobcats faced off against the Dickinson Red Devils on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at Bobcat Stadium. Outshot and outscored by Dickinson, the final score resulted in a 2-1 loss for the Bobcats. The first goal of the game was scored by a Frostburg jersey, with sophomore Mo Odolla getting the ball past the Dickinson goalkeeper. Their second game of the week was on Saturday, Sept. 22 against King’s College which ended in a 2-2 tie following double overtime. First-year Kaps Kapende scored his second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Randy Putnam. Sophomore forward Mo Odolla scored the second goal of the match to tie the game at two. The referee gave out ten yellow cards, five to each team. King’s College scored a goal in the second overtime period which was called back by the referee, ending the game tied at two.

Women’s Soccer:

Much like the men, the women’s soccer team did not earn a win on Wednesday night either. They played against the Bridgewater Eagles at Bobcat Stadium in a close game, skill-wise. The Bobcats took a total of six shots, and senior goalkeeper Rhianna Lapen made a season high of seven saves. The Bobcats traveled to Chatham in Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon for a nonconference competition. Unfortunately, the Bobcats brought home a 1-2 loss, after going into double overtime. Senior forward Hailey Turney scored the lone goal for the Bobcats. Lapen saved a penalty kick in the first overtime period. The next game will be played on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Gettysburg.

Volleyball:

The Bobcats traveled to Capital Athletic Conference opponent Mary Washington University to play in their first conference match of the season. After losing to Mary Wash 0-3, the Bobcats’ record falls to 5-10, 0-1 in the CAC. Throughout the match, Mary Washington had a 41-19 kills advantage, but the Bobcats shined with aces 6-2. First-year Haley Altemus led the Bobcats with seven kills for the day. Over the weekend, the Bobcats played in the Hampton Inn River Hawk Classic against Messiah (21-25, 20-25, 15-25), Rochester (21-25, 20-25, 18-25), and Susquehanna (15-25, 19-25, 16-25). Regrettably, the Bobcats came home with 0-3 losses on each match.

Football:

The Frostburg football team defeated Rowan’s football team at home on Saturday, Sept. 22, 34-7. This was a great win for the Bobcats. Check out: https://thebottomlinenews.com/bobcats-seize-34-7-win-against-rowan-in-home-opener/ for more information on the win.

Men’s & Women’s Cross Country:

The women’s cross-country team placed third out of three teams competing at Messiah over the weekend. Junior Sarah McCurry came in first place for the Bobcats. The men’s cross-country team placed second out of three teams competing at Messiah. Claiming first-place for the men was senior Robert Romano. The next race will be the Bobcat Invitational next weekend.

Men’s & Women’s Tennis:

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams opened their season with victories over Hood College this past Saturday. The men’s team shutout Hood, 9-0, while the women won soundly, 6-3. The women won two of the three double matches and four of the six single match ups. Their matches Sunday were cancelled.
