Women’s Basketball Pushes for a Positive Season

Your Frostburg State Bobcats took on CAC opponent Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, February 3rd.

Even with the 70-59 loss, four Lady Bobcats contributed with double digit scoring: Kache Fields (12), Kirsten Rayner (13), Courtney Young (11) and Bryce Papp (10).

When asked how the team prepared in practice for Harrisburg, Kache Fields said, “In preparations for Penn State Harrisburg we were constantly doing drills that would benefit us, such as closing out on shooters, boxing out, and lastly, we did game-like situations that Penn State might throw at us in the game so we would not be surprised at anything.”

Penn State Harrisburg started the game fast, scoring six unanswered points, leaving the Bobcats playing catch up. With the help from the senior leaders Courtney Young and Megan Kelly, the Bobcats were back in the game but still trailing 19-10 at the end of the first quarter.

FSU went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the second quarter to cut the Lion’s lead to five points.  Big scores by Fields, Papp and Young kept the game at close reach, while Penn State still led by seven at the end of the first half.

FSU came out to start the second half charged up: exchanging points back-and-forth, cutting the lead to only three, and getting the fans excited for the Bobcats’ comeback.

The third quarter was electrifying, even though the Bobcats trailed; they were attacking, scratching and clawing at any opportunity to take control of the game.

Going into the fourth and final quarter, FSU trailed 52-44.

FSU stormed into the fourth with jump shots from Rayner and Courtney Young, and a lay up from Papp to cut Harrisburg’s lead to only three points. The rest of the quarter remained close, however the Lions pulled ahead in the final seconds of the game and claimed the victory.

“Before every game the coaches are intense and hype because each game gives us another chance to go out and ball out,” said Kache Fields regarding the attitude coaches put in them before every game.

The Bobcats will return to Bobcat Arena for a CAC matchup against St. Mary’s (Md.), Saturday, February 6th. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

When asked what it takes to end the season on a positive note, Amber Downey replied, “To end the season on a positive note we must stay together as a team and just continue to believe in each other no matter what.”

Even with the disappointing loss the Frostburg community stands behind the women’s basketball team and coaching staff and will cheer them on until the end of the season.
