Women’s Soccer Overpowers Penn State Altoona
Zeal is not only a word that is described as having great energy or enthusiasm, but also seems to be the continuous vibe for Frostburg State University’s women’s soccer team.
Heading into their seventh game of the season, the women’s team is entering the next match with the mindset that, “even though we won the last game it doesn’t mean anything for the next game” says freshman center/outside defender Danielle Ferris.
The lady Bobcats dominated the lady Lions of Penn State Altoona in a 5-2 game Tuesday night. Scoring within the first five minutes of the game, it was clear the lady Bobcats meant business. Senior Erin Worthman led this women’s team with her first goal scored, assisted by Kelsey Wentworth. Along with Worthman having an assist, she was also an asset for the second goal scored. Worthman thus served the corner kick, in which Senior Chelsie McCoy was able to seize and score.
Teammates Leah Yurko and Melanie Bell also assisted in the team win. Yurko not only scored in both the first and second half, but also with no assist. Shortly after Yurko’s contribution, Bell scored while also having no assist. The women’s team continues to show how well, not only individually, but also as a whole they can work together.
The lady Lions were able to score two goals by Emily Casey and Brittany Allison, but were not able to get past the lady Bobcats defense in order to catch up. Both teams, offense and defense, worked hard to ensure they would walk away with a win against the lady Lions.
Ferris spoke out about the team goals as wanting to “have a good season record and hopefully get back to the CAC championship and then get into the NCAA tournament”. The lady Bobcats won the 2014 CAC championship against Mary Washington with a final score of 2-0. This women’s team hopes to have a successful season, as last year, and make it back to championships to be titled as two time reigning champions.
Although, thus far, the team has been successful in winning four games, they have suffered two losses. Losing to John Hopkins (1-6) and Washington & Jefferson (2-5) has showed the team that not every game will go exactly how they want. After losing back to back the team went to the drawing board focusing on how they can improve for the next game.
In the following game against Shenandoah University, it was clear the women’s team had a different mindset. Taking the win (2-1), they confidently went into this game against Penn State Altoona with an overpowering win. Having a future goal in mind of making it back to the CAC championships, the lady Bobcats will work hard throughout every practice and game in order to succeed.
All are encouraged to support the women’s soccer team in the hopes of making this season fun and successful.
