Women’s Volleyball fights hard against Christopher Newport

On Friday, Sept. 28, the Frostburg State Women’s Volleyball team took an unfortunate loss to Christopher Newport Captains in a four-set match.

Many Frostburg State students and followers of the team were excited for these upcoming games and the heightened competition of the weekend.

The Bobcats were powered by junior Biamba Tshitenge and Haley Altemus as they jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set.  The crowd was filled excitement to see the team come out so strong, but it was soon silenced by a quick three-point run by the Captains.  Several points after that volleyed back and forth between the Bobcats and the Captains, making every point that much more thrilling!  With the set still within one point, the Captains made a late comeback with two strong kills, but the Bobcats held strong and were able to take the lead. The deciding point was a kill from junior Ashante Corey-Bey to win the first set.

When asked how she stays poised in close games down the stretch, Corey-Bey said, “having the drive and will to push through… I envision winning and putting everything together that I was taught to outsmart the other team, and I think about how I can be an asset to my team regardless of if I’m making the point or my teammate is.”

The second set was when the Bobcats came out sluggish.  The energy from the beginning of the game was missing as they fell into a 4-0 deficit.  There was some fight in the Bobcats soon to come. Corey-Bey and Katie Onyundo brought the team within just three, but after that the Captains took off with eleven straight to take the set.

The Captains also kept that same energy, running out to a quick six-point lead and never looking back.  There was not much that went in the favor of the Bobcats, as they lost the third set 25-14.

Unfortunately, as we hoped for a different ending than the last set, the fourth went in the Captains favor.  Christopher Newport won the last set with a variety of errors from the Bobcats, with the final score 25-10.
