University Proposes Fall Tuition Increase

In a move widely expected across campus, the FSU administration has announced that student tuition will almost certainly increase at Frostburg State University in the fall of 2015. University officials have proposed a universal five percent tuition increase for the entire 2016 fiscal year.

The increase comes as no surprise to the campus community, which faced a two percent increase at the beginning of the current semester. Faced with a massive, unexpected decrease in state funding, the university raised tuition in the Spring 2015 semester as a last-minute, emergency response to the state cuts. Administrators warned students that further tuition raises would likely be necessary as the campus struggles to find ways to create more permanent fiscal savings.

Other university actions to reduce spending include the elimination of the Cost of Living Allocation (COLA) increase given to faculty and staff in January of 2015. The two percent increase will be eliminated in July of this year.

Further investigations are being conducted to determine where savings could be made. Program evaluations and elimination of excessive course sections are currently being explored. Stay connected with The Bottom Line for updates concerning tuition increases and other budget-related stories.
