Men’s Basketball Captures Win Against Spartans of York Pa.

The FSU men’s basketball team (7-17, 5-12) came out on top against the Spartans of York Pa. (9-15, 5-12), Wednesday evening, Feb. 17th. Ending the game in a final score of 71-68, the Bobcat men redeemed themselves from last weeks’ loss in OT against Wesley College within the last few seconds of the game.

The Spartans of York Pa. gave the Bobcats a good run by constantly taking the lead and tying the score on over 11 occasions. It wasn’t until the near end when the accurately scored foul shots and extra points took FSU into the lead to win the game.

The game came down to the last five minutes; it was then when senior Quinton Dodson was able to hit two foul shots assisting in the Bobcats lead. As the time winded down to 3:17 senior Shawn Henson hit a layup taking the score to 67-63. But the Spartans would make a slight comeback after rebounding and scoring a free throw shot which handed them the lead for the 11th time. It was here where the score became 68-67 with only 0:46 seconds left in play.

The Bobcats were familiar with the pressure of the game coming down to the last few seconds. This sense of pressure came from their previous game against Wesley College (8-15, 6-10 CAC) where senior Nick Smoot scored a game-tying three pointer taking the men into OT (77-77). Unfortunately the Bobcats fell to their opponents, 84-82, after missing the last shot in the last second.

In the final round against the Spartans, sophomore Tyler Michael and senior Shawn Henson were the last two scorers of the game. Michael was able to knock down his foul shots with 23 seconds left followed by Henson scoring two more with 9 seconds left. These last few points rounded off the Bobcat win, 71-68.

Many of the Bobcat men were able to make the game stats list of leaders. Seniors Nick Smoot (20pts.), James Peters (12pts.), Shawn Henson (10pts.) and sophomore Tyler Michael (17pts.) left the game taking away the most points. Smoot (4FGM) and James (1FGM) also were recognized for their three-point field goal stats along with senior Jordan Jones (1FGM). Tyler Michael, Shawn Henson, James Peters and Quinton Dodson all assisted in scoring their free throw attempts. Lastly, freshman Edwin Cole, sophomore Zachary Coalmon, Tyler Michael and Shawn Henson were all rebounders in the game win.

The win against the Spartans was the last home game of the season for the Bobcats. The team will travel to Salisbury Md., where they will play against Salisbury- Sammy Sea Gulls, Saturday at 3p.m. Following the final game of the regular season the Bobcats are scheduled to play in the CAC tournament; the schedule for the tournament is to be announced .
