Bobcat’s Men Track & Field Takes First For the Second Straight Week

Both FSU men’s and women’s track teams competed at the Mason-Dixon Invitational, hosted by Gettysburg College on Saturday, April 20.

The women’s track and field team finished the event in third place out of nine teams. Junior Keirstin Tawney took first place in the hammer throw, tossing 45.05 meters. Senior Holly Van Wie earned second in the event, throwing 43.79 meters. Van Wie also competed in the discus, finishing in first place with a throw of 32.67 meters.  Sophomore Cassandra Vogle competed in the javelin throw, earning second with a throw of 30.56 meters.

Junior Sarah McCurry competed in the 10,000-meter, finishing in first place with a time of 42:59.76.

The men’s track and field team took first place out of 16 teams for the second straight week with three individual wins and a relay victory.

Sophomore Braxton Clark competed in the 10,000-meter run and earned first-place, with teammates Matthew Whitley taking third and Dominic Mandile taking fifth.

The Bobcats’ 4×100-meter team of first-year Demetrius Sim, senior Shamar Nelson, junior Dajon Wiseman, and sophomore Clayton Washington earned the victory.

Senior Robert Romano ran in the 5,000-meter run and earned an individual victory in his fifth straight outdoor meet. First-year James Gilliam finished in eighth-place in the 5,000.

In the long jump, Nelson finished second with 6.36 meters, first-year Ratez McLaurin finished third with 6.25 meters, and junior Kevon Adams placed fourth with 6.21 meters.

James Naill competed in the javelin throw and earned first place by being the only one to throw over 50 meters (53.78).

Juniors John Kerns and Michael Belcher both competed in hammer throw and discus, and both finished in the top three. Kern threw 53.29 meters to get second place in hammer throw, and Belcher threw 49.69 to get third. Kern finished the discus in second place with 44.51 meters, and Belcher finished in third with 44.33 meters.

Frostburg State track & field will travel to West Virginia University to compete at the Mountaineer Showcase next weekend.
