Bobcats Win Home Opener in Double Overtime Thriller
The Frostburg State University Bobcats played their home opener this past Thursday against Charleston (WV). The Bobcats came into this game with a record of 2-0, while Charleston’s record was 1-0.
Charleston started off the game with a touchdown drive that was capped off by UCWV’s Tyreik Mcallister for a seven yard touchdown. Frostburg couldn’t get anything going offensively in the first half of this match. Their only points were caused by a field goal completed by kicker Dayne Koontz from 23 yards. Frostburg would get their first touchdown of the game mid-way through the third quarter where Graham Walker would connect with Malik Morris for a 19 yard touchdown making it 10-7 with 8:38 left in the third.
Later on in the third quarter, Charleston would rebound with a touchdown of their own which was caused by a pass from Guy Myers to Marquis McCoy for a four yard touchdown making it 14-10 with 1:26 left in the third. The next score wouldn’t happen until the final minute of the 4th quarter where Frostburg Walker would connect with Christian Thornton for a 22 yard touchdown to give the bobcats a 17-14 lead with 55 seconds left to play in the 4th. Charleston ended the 4th quarter driving the ball down the field and connecting on a field goal to tie the game at 17, ending regulation.
In overtime between these two teams, Frostburg started with the ball and drove it down the field. They would punch it in for a 1 yard touchdown by Gavin Lavat making it a 24-17 game. Charleston would respond with a touchdown of their own by Josh Brown on a two yard touchdown. In double overtime, Charleston’s field goal was blocked, resulting in no points for them. Frostburg would take advantage of the blocked kick as all they would need is a field goal to win. Later on in the second overtime, Frostburg would get it in the end-zone once again by Lavat to give Frostburg a 30-24 win in a thrilling overtime game.
Frostburg advanced to 3-0 as Charleston fell to 1-1.
For Frostburg’s next game, they will travel to Concord, WV on September, 25th to take on the Mountain Lions.
