Get to Know Rugby Coach Curtis Baker

1)Do you have any expectations on the creation of the Women’s program?

“Absolutely!  For every woman who chooses to play, I want rugby to be among their most enjoyable and important experiences at Frostburg.

Without question, rugby is off-the-charts fun to play. But there is more to it than that. Just ask someone who currently plays (or used to play) about their thoughts on the sport. Their eyes will light up and their response will include words like ‘passion,’ ‘intense,’ ‘purpose,’ and ‘awesome.’

My goal and expectation is that everyone who plays for Frostburg will feel the same way.”

2)What brought you to Frostburg and how long have you been coaching?

“I joined the faculty at Frostburg in May 2020. I am an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership in the College of Education. I teach leadership courses at both the Master’s and Doctoral level.

Rugby has been an important part of my life for more than 30 years. I played rugby for the University of Southern California, the London School of Economics, Tufts University, and Wilmington Men’s Rugby Club.

I began coaching the sport in 2003, when I founded boys and girls rugby programs in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District in Chester County, Pennsylvania. I have been coaching rugby ever since. I am certified as a Level 300 coach”.

3)Any advice to Women who are thinking about joining but might be hesitant?

“I would offer three bits of advice to those who are interested but hesitant:

First, there is no better time than now to join Frostburg Women’s Rugby. We are a start up program. At this moment, every woman on our team is new to the game. Everyone will learn together.

Second, there is a place for everyone on the rugby pitch. No matter your size, shape, or personality type, you can thrive in this game.

Third, how cool will it be to be a member of the inaugural team of Frostburg Women’s Rugby? You will forever be a founding player, and be linked with the future success of the program.

I encourage anyone who is interested to come play. You’ll have a great time”.
