J-Law: Our Fictional Best Friend: Why Jennifer Lawrence is taking over the internet… and the Oscars

You may know her only from “The Hunger Games” as the crusading, bow slinging, backwoods Katniss Everdeen, but Jennifer Lawrence has emerged from the depths of Hollywood (and The Capitol) as a refreshing, down to earth star that we all secretly want to befriend.

Lawrence achieved notable fame with her 2010 drama, “Winter’s Bone,” for which she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, becoming the second-youngest person to do so. Since then, she has gone on to star in the megahit series, “The Hunger Games,” based on the books by Suzanne Collins. In 2013, Lawrence won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performace alongside Bradley Cooper in the Oscar-nominated film, “Silver Linings Playbook.”

This year, she is at it again with her third Oscar nomination, but this time, for her performance as Rosalyn Rosenfeld in the vintage crime-comedy, “American Hustle.”

Aside from her extensive list of awards and Oscars, Lawrence has proved to be a Hollywood success beyond the screen by being unabashed about her curves. After accepting the role for Katniss in “The Hunger Games,” Lawrence was instructed to lose weight for the role. Lawrence refused, later stating, “I was very adamant about that, because I think that our industry doesn’t take enough responsibility for what it does to our society, about having these unrealistic expectations, and I don’t want to be part of that.”

In addition to her sticking to her guns (or bow) on her image, Lawrence has proved to be surprisingly candid to cameras and crowds in a way that is not often seen from high-profile celebrities.

During her acceptance speech for the Oscar for Best Actress, Lawrence began with, “I beat Meryl!” Now, while this appears on the surface as a cute reference to Meryl Streep’s extensive history of winning at the Academy Awards (18 times and counting!), it was actually a referance to Streep’s film “The First Wives Club.”

Often seen on the red carpet asking for food or more specifically, pizza, Lawrence reminds us all of the important things in life.

The internet has caught on to Lawrence’s habit of “photobombing” individuals at events and purposefully making faces at cameras. While glamour has not been completely wasted on the goofy, Lawrence certainly makes an effort for us all to feel connected with her. It is this connection that has spawned countless BuzzFeed articles and trolling GIFS along the internet, filled to the brim with memes of the starlet and her zany adventures on the red carpet and in interviews.

Speaking of interviews, Lawrence is known to pick onHunger Gamesco-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, making fun of  Hutcherson’s height (he’s 5’6”, she’s 5’9”) and Hemsworth’s accent (Australian). In one interview, Hutcherson satirically joked, “It’s really sad to see her downward decline in personality in general, her awareness of other people’s emotions… She’s become a real Oscar monster!”

So the next time you’re disgusted with the materialism of Hollywood and the unrealistic expectations it exports, remember that J-Law has your back and, somewhere, she is at an awards party, proudly asking where she can find the buffet.
