Letter to the Editor: FSU Administrators Have Failed – Again
The views expressed in Letters to the Editor are not necessarily a reflection of the views of the staff of The Bottom Line.
Just like the title says, the administration at FSU has failed again. I could have said the same thing when FSU decided to use the limp defense of “private personnel matters” to justify the hiring of an individual associated with abusive boy’s rehabilitative camps. The University issued the same stale response when an FSU faculty member issued tweets promoting, or at least condoning, violence against protesters earlier this year.
When I say that the FSU administrators have failed the community again, you might also think I’m referring to the initial and continued failures regarding preventative measures against COVID-19 on campus, with shenanigans like delayed test results or non-compliance with preventative measures by staff (with little to no consequences). These failures endangered not only the campus community, but all of Frostburg.
This time though, FSU’s administration has failed in a larger way. It is no surprise that there are budget shortfalls at the University this year. An option suggested by the AFSCME, drawing from the University’s twenty-million-dollar reserve balance to cover the budget shortfall, was ruled out by VP Wyden with one of his explanations being that the University System of Maryland would need to approve the withdrawal.
How difficult is it to pen a letter to the USM? Apparently, it is difficult enough to implement salary cuts and lay off AFSCME members in an ostensible act of retaliation. After the salary cuts, much of the administration will continue making 6-figure salaries, while twelve employees (9 of which made less than $50,000 per year) will be laid off.
I would hope President Nowaczyk would reevaluate his affirmation that “FSU has the obligation to seek to do what is best for all of its employees,” when his and his administration’s actions clearly run counter to this statement.
