Bobcats Men’s Basketball Season Ends in Victory

MBB senior day 22

On Saturday, February 26th, the Frostburg State University (FSU) Men’s Basketball team played in their final game of the 2021-2022 season. On this day, it was also a very significant moment for the senior players because it was Senior Day. Players who were honored on this day included: Canaan Bartley, Sean Patterson, Torrin Stephens, and Jihar Williams.

This was a wonderful day for the players, and a day well needed after a fairly rough season. The Bobcats walked into this game with a record of 7-20. By adding some determination, the team was able to win the day in a close victory against the Fairmont State Falcons.

In the previous match between Fairmont and Frostburg, Fairmont won by eight points, but the mentality has changed since then.

The first half started with Fairmont dominating. The Falcons led by as much as fifteen with thirteen minutes into the game. The largest score difference was seventeen towards the end of the first half. Fortunately for Frostburg, opportunities continually presented itself in the form of free throws, and open jump shots. Players like Jaylon Johnson, and Stephens were capitalizing.

The Bobcats connected on a few three-pointers by Bo Schene, Johnson, and Agyei Edwards. This kept the game competitive as the first half winded down. The score was 47-32 going into the second half, and Fairmont led by fifteen. In the second half, much was of the same thing was happening. Plenty of Bobcat players took part in the effort to try and even out the score, but for the first five minutes of the second half, Fairmont stayed ahead at least nine points.

Frostburg kept fighting and finally at 5:50 the Bobcats took the lead on a steal and fastbreak layup by Edwards. Frostburg never allowed Fairmont to be on top again after that moment in the game, and while both teams were really close in scoring, five points made the difference.

The Bobcats won 80-75. As every team who’s season has ended short, FSU will be back in the lab and returning with more fire power that will help them in coming years. The future is also bright for those that are underclassmen on the team. We can’t wait to see next season!
